It's not about the Yak Wool!

As I look over previous posts I see the many ups and downs of this project.
We have collected over 100 boxes of books.
In November of 2014 we sent our first shipment only to receive it back a couple months later.
Then the devastating earthquake in April and we needed to send support more than books.
Now have successfully sent one shipment of 38 boxes of books. They arrived safe on 1 November 2015.
Our new shipping company sends the shipments air freight so it is much faster and more reliable.   The cost to ship 1 box is approx.  $100Singapore dollars.
We have 70 more boxes to send!
We will have to sell a lot of shawls to raise that much money.  Please consider making a donation to send at least one box.
I am privileged to work with so many generous people on this project.
The work in Nepal is moving forward helping those in need on so many different levels.
Thank you for your support.

Book collection is over but the work still goes on!

Light House Foundation staff and children sleeping out in make shift shelter after April 25, 2015 earthquake.
Light House Foundation Staff ready to lend an hand to their neighbors in need.
Pastor Raju Sundas doing relief work with Light House Foundation staff.

The April 25 and May 12 2015 Nepal earthquake left so much devastation in it's wake.  Light House Foundation (LHF) Nepal saw damage but everyone, staff and children were safe and unharmed although children and staff had to sleep outside in makeshift shelters for some time.  The LHF staff have been active in relief efforts bringing aid and comfort to many in need.
Along with helping others LHF staff and volunteers around the world are working to restore living quarters and the normal day to day operations of the foundations school.

The work of rescuing children from ruthless sex traffickers is all the more urgent with the chaos caused by the earthquake.  They are using the trouble and turmoil to further prey on the already disadvantaged in Nepal.  We must not become distracted from the work that has been begun to bring real hope and change to Nepal.

We have collected over 100 boxes of books and the library will be sent in graduated steps as it is not possible to send the whole shipment at this time.  (If you are going to Nepal from Singapore please contact me if you are willing to take a box with you as checked baggage 15/20kg) books.4.the.badi.library@gmail.com.

Stop Sex Trafficking with a Book!

The Problem
In 2011 Nepali Pastor Raju Sundas, a member himself of the Dalit (the untouchable caste in the caste system), saw the tragedy of sex trafficking amongst the Badi people. The Badi people have become dependent on prostitution as the main source of income to families.

Badi girls from early childhood know that a life of prostitution awaits them.

They witness prostitution in their own homes and watch their siblings being sold to brothels in India and Nepal. The Badi are considered the lowest in the untouchable caste in Nepal because of their dependence on prostitution.  Pastor Raju Believes the only way forward for the Badi people is protection and education.

The Solution
Protection -  To protect children from being sold to brothel owners, Pastor Sundas has created living and educational facilities for Badi children where they are safe from the horrors of sexual abuse. In addition, the facilities supply training for alternative business and job opportunities.

Education – Christian Community School a K-12th grade school, in Kathmandu was started in 2011 to educate Badi children who are being rescued from the very real threat of life as a sex slave. This school is equipping them with the skills that will help them break free of the cultural stigma of the caste system. With English as the global language of trade CCS is equipping them for work in the global marketplace.

The school has grown to more than 600 students with many more waiting to enroll and is in need of a library.

Untouchable: Children of God brought to you by Code Red Films - Out of Ashes - LIght House Foundation Nepal

November 17th the American Association of Singapore will be hosting a screening of the documentary film
Untouchable: Children of God.  This film features girls from the Badi tribe and expounds on the ugly reality of sex trafficking in Nepal and India.  The film will also be featured in the Documentary Film selections on Singapore Airlines in months of November and December 2014. It has also won awards at film festivals in the United States.
Out of Ashes and Light House Foundation Nepal have been instrumental in supporting Code Red Films in making and promoting this documentary.
It has been a great honor to work together to rescue Badi children from the horrors of the sex trade.

Half way there! First shipment to go by the end of November.

I have collected nearly 5000 books = 60+ boxes so far.  That puts the project just a little past the halfway mark.

The plan is to send the first half of the book shipment by late November.  It should arrive sometime in December.  I will continue to collect and catalog books and hopefully have the second half of the shipment ready sometime in March or before.

This project has been a terrific opportunity to meet many wonderful people who have offered their help to get the library collected and shipped.  It is a very time consuming process to collect, sort, box, catalog and then re-box all the books and I can not do it alone.  I am grateful for the assistance  that I have gotten that has allowed me to get to this point.

In order to send the books I will continue to need donations plus I along with a group of wonderful volunteers have been selling Yak Wool shawls that I brought back from my last trip to Nepal in May.  Between these two sources of funding I will have enough to pay for shipping the first 60 boxes.

I will continue to sell shawls and ask for donations to cover the second shipment in March.

Donation allows first books for Badi Library to be purchased - How to make a US Tax Deductible Donation

It is very exciting to see this project progress.  Recently a donation was made to the Badi Library Project that allowed the school to purchase over 1300 books from a supplier in Nepal.  This means the the initial installment to the library is already there and that the first books to arrive are new!  I am so pleased that the school was able to choose the books they wanted to purchase to start their library.

I have collected and cataloged over 1500 books already and that is a good start.  However, it's just a start the goal is 10,000 books or 100 boxes of books sooooo we still have a long way to go.

Please look through your books to see if you have any that are suitable for a Pre-K - 12th Grade library that you are willing to part with.
No books to donate? Please consider buying books from our list on www.fishpond.com to see our list find the catagory My Fishpond/Wish List/ type in Badi Library (shipping is free) Ship books to Angel Corrigan 335 Bukit Timah Rd.
